Well, the Ullr schedule of hikes is ending along with the warm days of the Fall season. We’ve had more than a dozen hikes on the schedule since November 1st. Fall meetings are now being held at Joseph’s Grill in St. Paul. Our most recent speaker was Tom Warth, the founder of “Books for Africa”. He was a fascinating man who grew this program from its infancy.
Twelve of us made the drive south to Boone, IA on October 20th. We took a railroad tour. But this was no typical railroad trip. Years ago, maintenance workers used hand-pumped cars to check the tracks for needed repairs. But things have changed – we were seated on the car (for 2 or 4 people) and we pedaled the vehicle! We enjoyed panoramic views of the Des Moines River Valley. The ride took us over the Bass Point Creek High Trestle which is 750 feet long and 156 feet high. Spectacular views! In the spirit of the upcoming Halloween season, staff donned sheets and posed as ghosts.
Not to be outdone, Ullrs celebrated Halloween with our annual Chili and Potluck Party. Some good sports even came in costume.
